In 2005, David Karp was running his software consulting business, developing new media for big media companies. He got the idea for Tumblr after becoming captivated by a new form of blogging known as "tumblelogging" that presented material of various formats (such as text, photo, and video) in a stream. While building a tumblelog for himself, the programmer realized other fans of the form would want to use a simple tool that would allow them to create their own.

So during a two-week window between consulting jobs, Karp, who first started coding when he was 11, created the first iteration of such a tool designed with speed, ease of use, and customization in mind.

Launched in 2007 for general consumption, the Tumblr platform now has 1.8 million users and has landed $5.5 million in venture capital from two rounds of funding with Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital. Karp, 23, says the 10-person company is not making money yet but will be experimenting with revenue-generating features this quarter.

In comparison to the former official webpage, which in my personal opinion it had seen better days, the Kenya Wildlife Service has a beautiful site and yet more interactive. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) conserves and manages Kenya’s wildlife for the Kenyan people and the world. It is a state corporation established by an Act of Parliament Cap 376 with the mandate to conserve and manage wildlife in Kenya, and to enforce related laws and regulations.

The challenges facing wildlife and biodiversity conservation in Kenya are many and varied. They include climate change, habitat degradation and loss, forest depletion, tourism market volatility, human wildlife conflict brought on by population growth and changing land use habits of communities that co-exist with wildlife as well as wildlife crime.

To tackle these issues, KWS has employed a multi-pronged approach and strategies and engage different interest groups, stakeholders and partners.KWS undertakes conservation and management of wildlife resources outside protected areas in collaboration with stakeholders. It is our goal to work with others to conserve, protect and sustainably manage wildlife resources.

The community wildlife program of KWS in collaboration with others encourages biodiversity conservation by communities living on land essential to wildlife, such as wildlife corridors and dispersal lands outside parks and reserves.

CYCLE WITH THE RHINO 2009

Hahaha, in my own perspective having participated in this event three times, its very adventurous. In other words its full of sweet risk, scorching heat, and it requires enormous courage on-the-inside to brush shoulders with charging buffaloes, investigative lions, and you never know when the rhino will give you company. You have to be physically fit my friend for the event!

All the same cycle with the Rhino 2009 is a spectacular adrenaline packed unique event that is held at the Lake Nakuru National Park where you get to cycle viewing wild animals. The race is organised in collaboration with Lake Nakuru Park Action Committee and Nakuru town Business community.

Lake Nakuru National Park is known as the “Jewel of Kenya’s National Parks”, it’s renowned to be a Bird watcher’s paradise famous for over a million flamingos, very successful rhino sanctuary and a Ramsar site. The park also boasts of hosting over 300 species of plants, 450 species of birds and 50 species of mammals. Over the years there are various challenges facing the existence of the parks ranging from wild fires, human wildlife conflict, deforestation, and competition for water resources.

The essence of this event is to support the government conserve this jewel, Lake Nakuru National Park.

According to the sponsors, the proceeds of this year’s event shall go towards community projects around Lake Nakuru National Park supporting the human wildlife conflict, tree planting and awareness creation on resource management, and Kenya Wildlife Service Conservation Trust.

EL NINO: Kenyans hope and fear

All parts of the country are subject to periodic droughts, or delays in the start of the rainy seasons. Kenya’s climate has had a profound effect on settlement patterns, as for centuries population has been concentrated in the wettest areas of the country.

Usually, rainfall occurs seasonally throughout most of Kenya. The coast, eastern plateaus, and lake basin experience two rainy seasons with the “long rains” extending roughly from March to June, and the “short rains” lasting from approximately October to December. The highlands of western Kenya have a single long rainy season, lasting from March to September.

Today there is no rain, there is no heallthy surviving livestock while others have gave in, and there is no harvest this season if the mercy of the heavens dont intervene.

Generally, the hottest time is in February and March and the coldest in July and August. Kenya’s different topographical regions experience distinct climates.

According to the 4th Triennial Global Consultation on Creation Stewardship and Climate Change held this July in Limuru, Kenya, changing weather patterns, rising sea levels, and an increase in the quantity and intensity of natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods and diseases such as malaria have the greatest impact on the poorest people in our world. "In order to minimise the harm associated with these changes and call for climate justice for the poor, responsible stewardship of God's creation requires us to tackle these causes," they state.

In its most recent update on the subject, the UN World Meteorological Organization stated that the expectation is for El Niño conditions to very likely prevail through the remainder of 2009 and into the first quarter of 2010. Susequently, the United Nations is helping Kenya prepare to mitigate the effects of torrential rains expected in the last three months of 2009 due to El Niño weather pattern.

Now that we are learning the hard way and experiencing the kicks of mother nature, its our responsibility to support the democratic and transparent governance of institutions that provide community environmental services from grassroot levels, and take actions as individuals for a better environment. I do.
